RuPaul’s All Stars Drag Race Episode 5: ‘Dynamic Drag Duos’ Review

Warning: This post contains spoilers. I recommend reading after you’ve watched the episode!

We’re now down to the final four, with only two teams remaining! In the workroom, after the departure of Alexis Mateo and Yara Sofia, the queens all seem very stressed as the finale is fast approaching.

RuPaul’s You Got She-mail message appears on the screen and she gives away a lot of hints about superheroes and the such, so it begins to sound like there’s going to be a really good challenge this week. Ru enters the workroom, and addresses the girls. “It do take balls to reach the Drag Race Hall of Fame.” Ru tells the group that for their mini challenge this week is to win a basketball-throwing game. Simple right? Jujubee and Raven were named the Skins and had to wear boob tubes and short shorts: “Girl I got a camel toe!” said Raven. And Chad Michaels and Shannel were called the Skirts and obviously had to wear little skirts! Chad says, “Sports and day drag – what a treat!

So the queens begin throwing hoops and Team Rujubee do really well! Team Shad start off strong and then just lose it which was unfortunate. “Who said white queens can’t jump?” said RuPaul. I have to be honest, all the queens looked rough during this challenge which just added to the comedy of it. Jujubee and Raven were victorious as they managed to score more hoops than their opposition. Both of them win a chance to phone home! RuPaul then talks to the girls about how he transformed into a secret agent/prostitute in his cult film Starrbooty! (A personal fave of mine!) The name of this week’s main challenge is #DragSuperPowers, with a prize of being published in a real superhero comic book.

This this challenge the two teams must create a concept for their superhero and supervillain, including their powers, missions, backstories as well as costumes. Just as I predicted, Raven and Shannel opted to be the villains, leaving Chad Michaels and Jujubee as the heroes.

Chad starts talking to Shannel about her plans and it’s all really sexual and crude, like “Firepussy” and pubic hair and squirting tits and Shannel was just rolling her eyes and was so over it. I think Shannel was taking the safer option by wanting to tone it down but Chad was set on going for the comedy route, making references to Jiggly Caliente who was went home in Season 4 for taking the serious road in a challenge. When Ru comes around to check on their progress, her advice is to make their plans a little more family friendly. It would probably be for the best! Raven tells RuPaul her team’s storyline and it really confuses her and Ru just looks less than impressed. Raven mentions about not wanting to play it safe, so she’ll have to find the balance between simplicity and going that extra mile.

Ru then tells the girls who are all hard at work, that the losing pair this week will have to lip sync against each other meaning that one of them will have to sashay away, leaving three of the finale. I GAGGED. They were also told they would be joined on the judging panel by Wendi McLendon-Covey and Elvira. Ru ALSO extended the queens’ challenge by telling them that they must all work together to create the choreography to a lip sync of Good Verses Evil.

The queens move onto the main stage to rehearse their group performance. Naturally, Shannel seems to want to take centre stage and includes loads of dramatic dance moves and poses and the other girls just aren’t feeling it. Chad disagrees with Shannel a lot which creates a lot of tension in the room.

The next day, Jujubee redeems her mini challenge prize by having a phone-call with her boyfriend. Another adorable moment!  Raven has a skype call with his mother, and *sigh* she mentions the FormDecor! Can anyone see a little pattern emerging? hahahahah the shade. Anyway, they have a cute little conversation and I love how blessed Raven is to have his mom’s support. Back in the work room, the girls talk about having to go up against each other within their pairs and………. Chad Michaels makes ANOTHER reference to The Hunger Games! They must be paying Ru a lot of money to get that in every week.

On the runway, RuPaul is wearing a gorgeous cat woman outfit. On the judges panel this week are Michelle Visage, Santino Rice, Wendi McLendon-Covey and Elvira. The girls then do their Good Verses Evil performance which is SO FIERCE!! They all worked so hard on it and it looked absolutely flawless. Each queen then walks the runway to show of their ‘super’ outfits. Chad Michaels transforms into Firecrotch in a gorgeous, flowing golden and red gown – she looks stunning and not a day past 16! Shannel becomes Lactasia wearing a very dominatrix, BDSM style outfit which I wasn’t too keen on. Jujubee walks down the runway as Melanina looking a lot like Britney Spears in the Toxic music video! Raven, my god, she was the perfect villain. She knows how to paint the house down. So.Phia Fierce.

The judges then critiqued the queens on their presentation. Santino decided that Team Shad’s characters were fully realised, however Michelle was confused by their storyline. “It’s like a trip to the gyno’s for me,” said Elvira! She also said that she loves Raven’s face (I agree) and Michelle said Team Rujubee gave her EVERYTHING. Wendi didn’t think they were superhero enough though and said Raven looked like he was in a McQueen show. She also wanted to see more skin on Jujubee but I think her catsuit was perfect. After, the four queens leave the stage while the judges deliberate.

When they returned, Ru announces Shannel and Chad Michaels as the winners. Personally, I don’t think they were better than Team Rujubee, and I definitely didn’t expect it to happen! I think it was edited in a way that made you assume Team Shad were the worse team. Anyway, RuPaul tells Raven and Jujubee that they must Lip Sync For Their Lives against each other. Literally the worst thing that could have happened to my faves.

Raven

Raven

The lip sync song this week is Robyn – Dancing On My Own – so beautiful and very perfect for the moment. It was such a horrible lip sync because both Raven and Jujubee were sobbing and even I was sobbing! It was just such an emotional moment – it’s impossible to choose between Raven and Jujubee. The pair performed, holding each other, sobbing and dancing slowly. So perfect and pure. As the song came to an end, they realised that one of them was being split up from the other.

“Raven and Jujubee… Shantay, you both stay,” announced RuPaul to everyone’s delight! Yesss! This was the most relief I have ever felt in my life. The nicest part of it was Chad Michaels cheering from the back of the stage. It was such a great ending to the episode.

“I want fried chicken now!” said Jujubee through tears of joy.

The final four: Chad Michaels, Shannel, Jujubee and Raven. For the finale, each queen will be working solo.
